Toggle Switches: What does SPDT Mean?

SP Single Pole
A device that opens,
closes or changes a
connection in a single
conductor of an
electrical circuit.
ST Single Throw
A switch that opens,
closes or completes
a circuit at only one
of the extreme positions
of its actuator.
DP Double Pole
A device that opens,
closes or changes a
connection in two
conductors of an
electrical circuit
DT Double Throw
A switch that opens,
closes or completes
a circuit at both
of the extreme positions
of its actuator.

Single Pole, single throw used on single wire circuits.

SPST-Two Position: OFF-ON


Single Pole, double throw used on two single wire circuits, permitting only one circuit to be energigized at a time.

SPDT-Two Position: ON-ON

Single Pole, double throw used on two single wire circuits, permitting only one circuit to be energigized at a time.

SPDT-Three Position: ON-OFF-On

Double Pole, single throw used to control two circuits simultaneouly. Circuits are off at the same time and on at the same time and may be of different voltages and from separate sources.

DPST-Two Position: OFF-On



Double pole, double throw switches control four circuits, premitting only two circuits to be energized at one time

DPDT- Two Position: ON-OFF
