An Easy Way To Solder To Small Tabs

On the left is a very small pin assembly that I need to solder a 22ga. wire to.

This is a very easy method of soldering wires to small tabs or pins. I am only going to do one, but you could do all these at one time using this method.

If I had to hand solder all these with a solder gun, it would be a task involving a lot of time and cursing!

The connector in the photo on the right are 24/20ga. solder seals. The unit in the lower area of the photo has had one end cut off about an 1/8" beyond the solder ring.

When you trim the solder seal be careful not to crush the solder ring. Use a sharp Exacto or utility knife to cut around the sleeve. If you push it down on a surface to cut it. You will crush the ring.

You can reshape the solder ring if you do crush it, but crushing it is best avoided.

Slip your wire into the modified solder seal and slide the whole assembly over the pin. This is where you could gang up as many as you needed to do.
Use a heat gun to shrink the tubing and watch the solder melt. Once it has saturated the wire strands and the pin, it is done.

You can use a small torch, but very careful. They are really too hot for this application

The photo on the left is a 16ga. wire that I am going to attach to a 1/4" flat tab. I flattened the solder seal slightly in order to get both it and the wire over the tab.
The photo on the right is just prior to heating up the connection.

As a side issue, the solder seal sleeve is Kaynar. Very tuff stuff. Note the photo below. The sharp edge of the tab did not pierce the sleeve when it was shrunk.

The sleeve also has a hot melt adhesive liner, which once shrunk, forms an environmentally sealed connection. Plus the glue provides strain relief.

This is the finished connection. The lower connection, showing a small amount of yellow, is a 10ga. wire using a 12/10 solder seal soldered to a 1/4" tab.

I hope the photos, as seen on your monitor show how well the solder penetrates the wire strands.

Last, but not least. You can connect several wires

to one tab...easily and quickly.
